Podcast of the Week #3: The Greatest Movie Ever

Or rather <echo>THE GREAAATEST MOOOOVIE EVEEEERR!</echo>

Hosted by Paul Chapman (AKA The Almighty Gooberzilla), a contributor to OtakuUSA Magazine, each week, Paul showcases a cult film with the help of one of his co-hosts (Usually whoever is available!):

  • His buddy Sean “Hollywood” Hunting
  • His long suffering founding co-host Katherine “The Great” (Long suffering as she's not always a fan of the film reviewed!)
  • And his mom, M.O.M. Mistress of Malapropisms

The sheer amount of films Paul and his co-hosts have reviewed is astounding!  Almost over 100 reviews!  From cheesy classics like Robot Monster to lesser known b-movies like Space Truckers.  Paul even tried to devote a bunch of episodes to Nicholas Cage films.  The style of each episode is very casual.  We get a quick synopsis and then an overview of favorite moments and odd thoughts on the story and characters.  It fast paced, funny and each episode is pretty short(About 30-35 minutes long).

Podcast of the Week #2-Jay & Silent Bob Get Old

"Every saga has a middle age..."

And with these words, cult film-maker Kevin Smith opens another episode of Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, his weekly podcast with his long time buddy, Jason Mewes. If you're a fan of Smith and his movies, you know them as the crazy stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob who weaved in and out of Smith's "Jersey" films, Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Clerks II and got their own spotlight film Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back!

But while Smith went on making films and starting a family, Mewes struggled with heroin addiction that only got worse as his fame as Jay grew. Smith was there for him, doing his best to help his best friend break the habit. Jason eventually did and the first few episodes of J&SBGO have them talking about those troubled years in front of a live audience. Not that it's all gloom. Our hosts put a lot of humor and random rambling into these stories (Who knew Jason like to paint Warhammer minis?). The later episodes are more of two buddies getting together rambling about whatever is on their minds that week (Usually something dirty...Most of the content on this show is NOT SAFE FOR WORK OR LITTLE KIDS!).

The last four episodes have ended with the duo doing a game for prizes with the audience. The one currently sticking around is "Let Us F%$#" where an audience member goes on stage to mimic a sex act with Mewes based on a title given by Smith. (Smith films it and posts it on the site)

All of this insanity is part of the growing SMODCAST podcast network of Smith and his other buddies doing their own podcasts.

So head on over to the site at http://smodcast.com/getold/ or do a search on iTunes (Where it won a Best of 2010 Award) and get ready to "snootch to the nootch!"

Paul T. Riddell and the Curse of The Green Lantern

All this talk of the upcoming Green Lantern movie makes me think of one question.  “What does Paul Riddell think of this and is he disappointed Denis Leary didn’t make the cut?”

Between 1998 and 2002, Paul T. Riddell wrote for various SF/Fantasy and comic book magazines, fanzines and websites.  (Most of these are long gone)  He also maintained an online collection of his articles, “The Healing Power of Obnoxiousness”  and an e-mail newsletter :The Hell’s Half-Acre Herald”.  What made his stuff worth reading (To me) was his willingness to rip into the general stupidities, not just of SF/Fantasy fandom (“The Church of Saint Spock, The Pointy-Eared”). but also of the industry itself (Bad publishing practices, screwing the writers, lack of mainstream advertising to pull in non-fan readers).  All with a style that was inspired by his own literary heroes, Hunter S. Thompson and Harlan Ellison.

If you can laugh at the following phrase (Slightly paraphrased)  Riddell came up with, perhaps his writing would have appealed to you…If it makes you fly into a rage…well…

Regarding Star Wars…“Although George Lucas may have had the bigger budget, everyone knows Ed Wood was the better writer!”

Despite his best efforts, Paul, realizing he was getting nowhere as far as being a mainstream writer, decided to call it quits, shutting down the site and the Herald.  He did some time blogging on his time working at a credit card call center and a separate blog where he continued his snarky style, but shut both down around 2005/2006 in order to devote more time to one of his strongest interests, raising carnivorous plants.

It’s a shame he’s not online anymore, I always enjoyed his writing, but I can respect his choice to quit and move on if it wasn’t working out.

Paul Riddell is now co-owner and operator (With his wife) of The Texas Triffid Ranch, a nursery devoted to “carnivorous, prehistoric, and otherwise exotic plants.”  If you really are interested in his writing there are three resources:

So what does this all have to do with the Green Lantern movie?  Well, back in April 1996, Paul wrote an April Fool’s article for The Met, a defunct Dallas based weekly paper about a underground film-maker, Edgar Harris (A name Paul would use as a pen name for comedy articles) being hired by Dreamworks Pictures to shoot a Green Lantern film with Mel Gibson as Hal Jordon, Michael Dorn as John Stewart and Denis Leary as Guy Gardner.  The actual point of the article was to criticize how Texas, at the time, screwed over local artists and film-makers.  As Paul later said, it should have been obvious since he says the producer was John Simon Richie (Sid Vicious’ real name) and the head writer was Cordwainer Bird (A pen name used by Harlan Ellison on scripts he wrote that he felt got edited/censored to death) and Paul ended the article with “the whole story could be an April Fool hoax.”

Lo and behold, chronicled in an article he wrote a couple of years later, the article was ACTUALLY TAKEN AS FACT by the fandom community.  Paul painfully recollected how one guy kept calling Dreamworks asking for a release date and the times he overheard at conventions, people taking about the movie and how he had to prove them wrong and claim responsibility for starting it all…and some of them STILL wouldn’t believe him!

So there’s the whole story.  Whenever the REAL Lantern movie will be good remains to be seen.  It just would have been cool to hear what Paul would have thought about it all.

…And it would have been cool to have Denis Leary play Guy Gardener….

Podcast of the Week #1-Subject Cinema

Welcome to what I hope will be a regular feature on my blog.

I am a huge fan of podcasts! I always make sure to load at least 5 to 10 shows each week on to my iPod. So I figured I'd devote some time on my blog to featuring my favorites as well as new discoveries.

So let's start with the podcast that first made me a podcast junkie!

SUBJECT CINEMA

Subject Cinema

Created around 2007 by Revere, MA residents, TC Kirkham, a former DJ and Kim Brown, a gal with a love of acting. Together, they podcast about all things movies. And they do it a way that makes you feel you're not only listening in on a conversation about movies, but that you're part of it.

They've covered so many subjects. Classics, b-movies, modern stars, up and coming actors, profiles of film-makers, theme episodes for the holidays. All of them insightful and funny.

I've personally met TC and Kim attending the "Attack of the B-Movies" special shows at the Showcase Revere Cinema. I helped them build their initial website and often write to their mail call feature on the show. They are really nice people and this show deserves all the fame and praise it can get. So show your support! Check out Subject Cinema today. "Real Movies for Reel People!"

Visit them at http://www.subjectcinema.com. Or find them on iTunes and suscribe.

Welcome!

Let's get this party started!

DANGADO GAMBATTE!!!!
